THE SCIENCE OF RELAXATION

Summer is in full swing in the Netherlands, and whilst many of our colleagues are currently enjoying a well-earned holiday, the rest of us are carrying on with work as usual. Read on to find out why it’s so important to step away from the computer from time to time.

INTERNATIONAL RELAXATION DAY

HOW TAKING BREAKS IMPROVES YOUR WORK LIFE

In today’s fast-paced work environment, the pressure to stay productive and constantly engaged can be overwhelming. However, this drive for continuous output often leads to burnout, stress, and a decline in overall well-being. As we approach International Relaxation Day on August 15th, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the importance of taking breaks during the workday and how they can enhance our productivity and health.

What is International Relaxation Day?

International Relaxation Day is a global observance dedicated to the art of slowing down and embracing relaxation. It’s a day that encourages people to take a step back from their daily routines, unwind, and focus on self-care. This day reminds us that relaxation is not a luxury but a necessity for maintaining a balanced and healthy life.

Why Taking Breaks Matters

Taking regular breaks during the workday is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Mental Health and Well-being: Continuous work without pause can lead to mental fatigue, anxiety, and stress. Short breaks allow the mind to reset, reducing the risk of burnout and helping to maintain mental clarity throughout the day.
  2. Enhanced Productivity: Contrary to the belief that working longer hours leads to higher productivity, studies show that taking breaks actually boosts productivity. A study by DeskTime found that the most productive employees work in focused sprints and then take breaks. Initially, the optimal ratio was discovered to be 52 minutes of work followed by a 17-minute break. However, more recent data shows that top performers now work for about 112 minutes before taking a 26-minute break, suggesting that the need for both deep work and longer periods of rest is essential for maintaining high levels of efficiency and mental sharpness.
  3. Improved Physical Health: Sitting for long periods can lead to various health issues, including back pain, obesity, and cardiovascular problems. Regular breaks give you the opportunity to stand, stretch, and move around, promoting better circulation and reducing the risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
  4. Creativity and Problem-Solving: Sometimes, stepping away from a task can provide the mental space needed for creative thinking. Breaks allow your mind to wander, which can lead to new insights and solutions to problems that seemed insurmountable. A study published in the journal Cognition found that brief diversions from a task can dramatically improve focus and problem-solving abilities.

How to Incorporate Breaks Into Your Day

Incorporating breaks into your workday doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few tips:

  • Schedule Short Breaks: Set a timer to remind yourself to take a 5-10 minute break regularly. Use this time to stretch, take a short walk, or simply breathe deeply.
  • Step Outside: Fresh air and natural light can do wonders for your mood and energy levels. Even a brief walk outside can help you return to work feeling refreshed.
  • Practice Mindfulness: Take a moment to close your eyes, breathe deeply, and focus on the present moment. This simple practice can reduce stress and improve your concentration.

As we celebrate International Relaxation Day, let’s remember that taking breaks is not just about stepping away from work—it’s about prioritizing our health and well-being. By making relaxation a part of our daily routine, we can cultivate a more balanced, productive, and fulfilling life.
